Creating a Great Development Portfolio

Posted on Jun 25, 2015

It seems that one of the best uses for the Internet is for marketing. Companies have found a number of ways to put it to use when it comes to marketing what they do and finding ways to reach new customers. Some companies like Frank Haney use their websites as an extended pamphlet, taking advantage of the ability to link to videos and other sites as well as embed video and audio into their own site. By combining all of the media available to them, the companies are figuring out ways to show off their development portfolios.

A development portfolio is roughly equivalent to the resume of a regular person. It lists all of the major hits of a company, demonstrating its capabilities in as many ways as the site designer deems possible. While the exact product can take many different forms, the bottom line is that the development portfolio can demonstrate exactly what the company does and how it can help its customers accomplish their goals. The website can show it far more easily than a pamphlet can, and do a much more thorough job. It is just a matter of figuring out the best way of doing so.

Building a portfolio is as simple as deciding which projects you are proud of and deciding how to best present them. The best projects to include are those that the company was the sole company that did the work, and where the client was very happy with the work. Another thing to consider is how what the project did for the company; if the project established the company or if there was a lot learned from the project then it is a great one to include. In essence, any project that put the company in a good light or is already well known is a candidate for inclusion.
When you are choosing between projects, look for the ones with a great story. People love a great story; being social animals we are always into learning more about each other, and a project with a great story teaches the client a lot about the company. Even if the project was a failure, if you can show that you learned something important from it then it becomes a great project to include.

In short, you are looking for ways to demonstrate that your company is an expert in its field. The development portfolio is usually the first thing that they see, and so it helps to have projects on display that show what you can do. Remember to impress and show the spirit of your company, and you should do well.
